Allied Equipment Industry-Leading Rental Solutions
the suction end of the vacuum will pull the nearby materials into the tank. Hydro excavator vacuum trucks use a combination of an air vacuum and a high-pressure water system to break up and form a slurry from the debris to be cleared away. Then, the truck sucks the debris into a tank to dispose of it elsewhere. When using the hydro excavator, you’ll have two components to keep track of — the water hose and the suction hose. First, the truck pressurizes water enough for it to break through layers of soil when released. The pressurized water acts as a digging agent, breaking down the soil. You spray the soil or debris with the water wand to precisely hit the spots you want to clear. As the soil loosens and mixes with the water, the air vacuum sucks it into the debris tank. Proper maintenance is critical to ensure the tank, hoses, and valve connections are leak-free to create as strong a vacuum as possible inside the tank. WHAT ARE VACUUM TRUCKS USED FOR? Vacuum trucks have most likely played a role in many aspects of your life. From the street signs you follow on your way to work, to the electrical and water services your company uses every day, the successful implementation of these services most likely included a vacuum truck. Some of the most common uses for vacuum trucks include: 1. Maintaining sewers and septic tanks 2. Performing underground installations and repairs 3. Excavating large areas of land 4. Removing debris WHEN SHOULD YOU RENT A VACUUM TRUCK? Renting equipment is your convenient and cost-saving solution. You can rent a vacuum truck for as long as you’ll need it for a specific project, making renting an attractive alternative to buying a machine you may only use a handful of times. When you rent, you also only pay the rental fees, without being responsible for repairs, maintenance, and insurance. If you want to use a vacuum truck, but don’t have access to regular storage space, renting can also help you do your job without investing in long-term storage solutions you would only use for a few pieces at a time. The convenience of renting allows you to take on occasional projects that require a vacuum truck, so you have the freedom to take on more jobs whenever you want. Additionally, if you already own a vacuum truck that’s currently out of commission for repairs, renting another one is a way for you to continue with projects and meet your deadlines while reducing your downtime. Keeping up with routine equipment maintenance should be prioritized just as much as finishing jobs, and renting additional equipment lets you do both.
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT VACUUM TRUCKS Whether you’re clearing debris or excavating underground infrastructure, you want to have the right tools for the job. When your worksite involves maneuvering around fragile pipes, collecting tough debris, or simply cleaning up after a larger project, the machines you use should be powerful yet precise. Vacuum trucks are the accurate solution you need. Combining the strength of pressurized water with the power of pneumatic suction, these machines can help you get the job done safely, neatly, and efficiently. WHAT ARE VACUUM TRUCKS? Vacuum trucks are innovative machines used to break up, collect and haul away soil, and other debris. Their basic design, includes, a truck with a large collection tank that’s hooked up to a vacuum hose. Putting pressure inside the tank allows the vacuum to suck materials into the tank to complete jobs such as clearing roadways of debris. Many vacuum trucks also come equipped with a pressurized water hose attachment. When spraying the water wand, the water pressure can break apart packed ground soil and other tough materials as an alternative to digging. The water hose and the vacuum work together to simultaneously break apart debris and remove it from a work area. Since the vacuum systems are attached to trucks, these machines are also useful for clearing waste from sites and transporting it to places for safe and proper disposal. HOW DO VACUUM TRUCKS WORK? Vacuum trucks use pneumatic suction, meaning they get their suction power from compressed air. Industrial vacuums work similarly to other types of household vacuums and shop vacs. The truck’s power source moves a fan or a pump, which pulls large amounts of air out of the tank. As the air particles move out, their density increases inside the tank and decreases outside of the tank, creating a vacuum force. The vacuum truck tank has two valves. Once you open these, the compressed air inside the tank will leave the tank to equalize the inside pressure with the outside pressure. As this happens,

Renting a Boom Lift vs. Renting a Scissor Lift
elevate your workers about 40 feet. This is adequate for most residential projects as well as indoor tasks. However, if you’re trimming towering trees or working on a high-rise building, 40 feet may not be enough. Articulating and telescopic boom lifts can reach more than three times as far. These are the best option if you need something with ample height. How Many People Are Involved in the Job? Boom lifts can typically accommodate only one individual on the lift platform. These are best for jobs where you need specialty work performed by a single highly skilled worker. Electrical work is a prime example. If you need to lift more than one person and a scissor lift can access the site, this is your best option. Rugged terrain scissor lifts are available to help you navigate rougher construction sites. A scissor lift’s platform is significantly larger. This equipment can hold several individuals, so you can lift your entire team to the work area for tasks like painting or major repairs. What’s Your Budget?
Working in hard-to-reach spaces is common for people in the construction and maintenance industries. Often times a stable work area is needed where a ladder just won’t stand up to the task. Boom lifts and scissor lifts can help you reach elevated areas, but these two equipment rentals have very different capabilities. Following are helpful hints to assist you in making the right choice when renting aerial equipment. What is a Boom Lift? A boom lift is a piece of lift equipment that elevates a worker in a small bucket or on a compact platform. Boom lifts are also known as man lifts and cherry pickers. This piece of equipment features a grounded base and hydraulic lift system. There are two primary categories of boom lifts: articulating boom lifts and telescopic boom lifts. Telescopic boom lifts have long straight arms. Mounted at an angle to the lift’s base, this arm can reach over some lower obstacles, but it has limited flexibility. The base rotates, but the arm itself is always straight. Telescopic boom lifts offer an impressive reach, often up to 180 feet. Articulating boom lifts, also known as knuckle booms, have jointed arms. The joints allow the arms to bend at one or more points, so the lift has more flexibility in its reach. Articulating boom lifts are ideal for accessing those hard- to-reach areas, as the arm allows you to reach up, over, and into criss-crossed braces. These braces squeeze together to push the platform upward. Scissor lifts move vertically. They must sit directly beneath the area that workers are trying to reach, which can limit their functionality somewhat. The base of the scissor lift needs to sit on flat, stable ground directly beside the workspace for the project to be accessible by those on the lift. Scissor lifts can typically reach heights of about 40 feet. What Direction Are You Moving? When you’re deciding between a scissor lift and a boom lift, it’s important to consider the direction of movement. If you’re elevating a worker to a spot that’s both up and over, you’ll need to use a boom lift. These are great for electrical or piping repairs in a difficult-to-reach area. If the worker is moving straight up, a scissor lift may suffice. This is a common pick for window or siding installation, cleaning, and repairs. How High Do You Need to Go? Consider the height of your project. A scissor lift can only BOOM LIFT some spaces. These have a slightly shorter reach than telescopic lifts, typically up to about 150 feet. What is a Scissor Lift? A scissor lift is a piece of equipment with a large flat aerial work platform supported by a series of
Boom lifts are the more expensive option by far. A scissor lift is a relatively affordable rental. This is the better choice if you’re
SCISSOR LIFT
looking to stay on a limited budget with your project. Boom lifts offer more functionality, but they can also be more difficult to use, particularly in the case of an articulating boom lift. Accordingly, they are also more expensive.
If your project is accessible with either option, you can save money choosing a scissor lift. Boom lift and scissor lift rentals provide convenient access to otherwise inaccessible sites. With the right equipment on hand, you can efficiently tackle any job.

HANDHELD CUT-OFF SAW SAFETY TIPS Handheld cut-off saws are versatile, portable power tools you can use to cut through concrete, stone, brick, pavers, metal pipes, or other solid materials. With the wide assortment of blades available, you can use your saw for a variety of applications. Taking the appropriate safety precautions is crucial for preventing job site injuries when using power tools. Handheld cut-off saws are no exception. The following tips can keep you Handheld cut-off saw safety begins before operating the tool. Conducting a quick inspection enables you to detect and troubleshoot mechanical issues that could impact the saw’s performance: • Check for loose fasteners: Make sure all bolts, screws, and other fasteners are tight and replace any that are stripped or damaged. • Inspect the trigger: Test the throttle trigger and stop switch to ensure they’re functioning correctly. • Check the wheel guard mounting: Verify that the wheel guard is secure and look for signs of cracks or other damage. • Inspect the wheel: Be sure that the saw’s wheel is the right one for your model and check for cracks, missing segments, or signs of water saturation. • Check the belt: Make sure the saw’s belt has the proper tension and adjust it if necessary. • Inspect the blades: The cut-off saw’s blades should be mounted securely, and the flanges should be free of any signs of damage. HOW TO USE A HANDHELD CUT-OFF SAW SAFELY Once you’ve inspected the saw and made sure it’s in proper working condition, you’re ready to use it at your job site. Safe operating tips include: • Get a firm grip: Always use two hands when running your saw, and be sure to maintain a tight grip while manipulating the throttle trigger. • Maintain the proper stance: Operate the saw on solid and your crew members out of harm’s way. ground and employ a stance that provides stable footing. Avoid standing directly behind the blade’s plane. • Avoid forcing the blade: Let the saw do the work by not “pushing” the blade into the cutting surface. Keep the blade moving in the same direction to prevent it from kicking back. • Position the blade correctly: Reduce the likelihood of a potentially dangerous blade kickback by not cutting with the upper section. Also, don’t attempt to cut objects that are above your eye level — stand on a stable elevated surface to attain a safer position. NEW SMART CREEP FOR CAT ® D3 SERIES SKID STEER LOADERS AND COMPACT TRACK LOADERS MAXIMIZES WORK TOOL PRODUCTIVITY
Caterpillar will soon launch a new smart creep feature for the full range of Cat D3 Skid Steer Loaders (SSL) and Compact Track Loaders (CTL) for operating Cat cold planer and wheel saw attachments. Smart creep senses the load on the attachment and automatically adjusts the drive command to keep the cold planer or wheel saw running at the most productive speed. A combination of attachment sensors and proprietary software optimally balances attachment load and machine speed to maximize productivity. By continually sensing the load on the attachment, smart creep increases machine speed when encountering less resistance and automatically slows the machine when encountering a higher load. Engine load remains constant, while the operator can monitor hydraulic pressure on the in-cab display panel. Smart creep takes the guesswork out of setting the right creep speed for operating the attachment. Without the aid of this feature, setting creep speed too fast can lead to stalling the attachment, and too slow of speed results in productivity loss. Smart creep software smoothly and efficiently determines the optimal machine speed for cutting conditions. With this new smart attachment feature from Caterpillar, the operator needs only to activate the standard creep control system and set the maximum
creep speed on the advanced display inside the cab. Once the tool engages the cut, smart creep measures load on the attachment and adjusts the drive command automatically as cutting begins. In the event of the cutter jamming or stalling, an auto-reverse feature within smart creep quickly changes machine direction to allow the tool to clear the jam. Targeted availability for a smart creep on Cat D3 SSL and CTL machines is the third quarter of 2022. A field installation kit consisting of sensors and machine software for operating the new feature will be made available for existing fleet loaders and attachments. Once commercially available, new cold planer and wheel saw purchases will be shipped from the factory with the required hardware installed, and new D3 SSL and CTL models will come smart creep ready from the factory. More information about Cat D3 Skid Steer Loaders and Compact Track Loaders, smart attachments, and new smart creep can be found by contacting Wagner Equipment Co.
