GETTING PERSONAL

ISSUE

Braden Wagner Current Role Sales Development Manager

INNOVATION

As part of the Wagner family, I’ve been working, in some capacity, for the company since the early

2000s. In 2012, I became Branch Manager for the Wagner Rents Denver store. Then in early 2018, I

moved into a role that is new for Wagner: Digital Enablement Manager. Wagner realized that with so

much technology available, there was a need to manage how we train, educate, adopt, and innovate.

Our ultimate goal? Make our customer’s lives easier, their businesses more profitable, and the greater

community more sustainable. And to that, we’re always asking questions: How do we anticipate and

solve an operator’s challenges? How can we help customers adapt more effectively? And how can we

improve, rather than burden, our customer’s experience with new platforms and apps?

In this issue, we’ll talk about the past ( page 11) , the present (page 8) and the future (this entire issue).

We’ll provide tips and reminders for daily efficiency (My.cat.com) , and explain how the critical

customer experience depends on channel flexibility and stellar communication (page 5) . Finally, you’ll

hear how much community means to Wagner Equipment Co. (page 6) .

Thanks for reading The Wagner Review,

Braden Wagner

We know how critical effective communication is to your business and our relationship. That’s why Wagner uses the “Modern” text message based communication tool to work more closely with our customers. Modern allows us to go beyond 2-way texting and share estimates, send inspections, approve work orders and more.

CONSTRUCTION BEST PRACTICES: The Customer Experience

2. Decide When to Communicate

terms—spell them out. And keep it simple. Label email

The dynamic and fast-paced nature of construction sometimes leads to strained relationships with clients. Progress one day—barriers the next. Often it’s simply not under your control. But “customer experience” is in your court. If you want to grow your business and generate referrals, here are a few tips: 1. Decide How to Communicate–Based on

subjects and use bullets or bold subheads throughout the email. These tricks can help clear the clutter. 4. Make Technology Work for You You already use technology to improve your business practices on the back end. Make sure your customers are benefiting, too. Video clips, photos of projects- in-progress and and even before-and-after shots are ideal to show off your best work and reassure clients. And don’t neglect social media. Strong communication is the lifeblood of any project and is the key to customer satisfaction, regardless of project or company size. If you follow the practices above, referrals will arrive.

Even the best-planned projects encounter delays. Keep clients in the loop. This will display commitment and build trust. Two good rules of thumb are frequency and consistency. This may look different from one customer to another. Do they need a daily update? A weekly update? Or is a monthly conversation sufficient for longer projects? Ask their preference and follow through. The words we use either help or hinder communication. When you’re relaying information about a project, how do you aim for clarity and simplicity? Avoid using industry jargon that only construction professionals will understand (unless, of course, your client is in the industry). If you have to use acronyms or construction

the customer’s needs Do they depend on email or do they prefer to talk on the phone? Is there an app that helps you stay in touch? Or do your customers text? No matter your method, be up front about it. Not only will this help you stay more organized, but it sets expectations. For larger companies and projects, take the next step and assign a direct client contact. This means fewer barriers, better communication, and happier customers.

3. Keep it Simple

Wagner Contributes to Aurora Memorial LOVE & LEADERSHIP:

Wagner is a longtime partner of the Colorado Contractors Association (CCA). In 2015, Sales Development Managers Betsy Wagner, Braden Wagner, and Ryan Shaughnessy joined the CCA’s inaugural Emerging Leaders Council (ELC), a group of professionals under forty who aim to enhance collaboration and leadership within the infrastructure industry. As their 2017 community service project, the ELC decided to partner with the City of Aurora to help develop the 7/20 Memorial Garden for the victims of the 2012 Aurora theater shooting. This ambitious project included landscaping, paving paths, moving boulders, and installing irrigation to complement the artwork on 20,000 sq. ft. of land at the intersection of Alameda Ave. and Chambers Rd. And as community service chairperson, Betsy was instrumental in finding vendors, hiring project managers, and managing volunteers to make this project a reality. “Throughout the project, we watched a bare patch of land begin its transformation,” said Betsy. “The new site will memorialize the lives lost and forever impacted by this tragedy.” Along with other key members of the ELC, Wagner donated equipment and materials. While the project was originally scheduled for completion in 2019, due to masterful project management and volunteer response, the ELC finished the Memorial Garden in 2017, nearly two years ahead of schedule. Said Wagner Marketing Manager Chad Nielsen, “Aurora is our headquarters. Our employees, their families, and their friends are affected by what happens in this community. As a business, we were honored to be able to give back in this way."

Dozers & Motorgr

Now that Cat ® is over the hurdle of regulation, we’re excited to invest in research and development that helps customers solve problems and make money. And with these innovative new machines, we’ve done just that.

Roll-over Protection: Previous machines included two big roll-over bars for protection. Now those have been built into the design, dramatically increasing visibility. Maintenance: 12% lower maintenance costs due to longer service intervals, which also reduces downtime. The New Motorgrader Wheels & Levers Get the Love Back in the 1990s, Cat had the 140H. You may remember its traditional controls, which included a steering wheel along with several different levers to control the blade. While somewhat tough to operate, drivers learned to run it well. Then in the early 2000s, Cat introduced the 140M. More ergonomic, more efficient and requiring less operator motion, this machine increased safety and reduced fatigue by simplifying the controls with joysticks. The Joystick Resistance But when the 140M came out–and now, even years later–some veteran operators are resistant to the joystick. They learned with the levers and they like the levers. Operator voices mattered–Cat management was listening. As a result, some customers tend to keep their old H-series and rebuilt them. Best of Both Worlds In an never-ending effort to provide customers with choice and convenience, today’s 140 motorgrader is an updated version that includes the best of both worlds. It has the same engine and powertrain of the 140M, but includes the wheels and levers of the 140H.

This year we’ll introduce the D6 Dozer and the D6XE.

Note: In an effort to simplify the product line, and similar to the 320 NextGen Excavator of 2018, Cat has dropped the letters from the Dozer name. No K, No N, No T. Just D6. You’ll see more of this in equipment to come. The New Dozers The D6 Dozer has been redesigned from blade to tail–a complete overhaul since its last iteration in 2015. It’s always been popular, durable, and reliable. Some even described it as bulletproof. And there was understandable concern about messing up a good thing. But Cat has managed to build upon its performance including 20% more fuel efficiency than before. The D6XE is the industry’s first High-Drive, Electric-Drive dozer/ tractor. While not quite a battery powered Tesla, (this machine runs on diesel fuel) its engine powers a generator, which then sends electricity to the electric drive components. The D6XE is designed for higher-performance applications–bulk earth work and production dozing. And it's up to 35% more fuel-efficient and 50% more productive than its predecessors. Features Both new dozers boast the following features: Undercarriage: Redesigned and rebalanced, the high track undercarriage has increased stability and better safety. Blade: Because these dozers are put to the test, their rugged, long-lasting blades are invaluable. Cab: Increased ergonomic style, space and comfort with premium heated and cooled seats, improved HVAC flow and reduced sound overall.

From Insect to Hexagon: 90+ Years of the Cat ® Logo EVOLUTION OF A LOGO: What’s in a logo? A product? A reputation? A foundation of design? All of that and more. Caterpillar’s logo started nearly a century ago with wavy letters crawling across machines. Thus began a journey to become the world’s most recognized symbol in trusted construction equipment. Here’s a look at the evolution:

1915 | The earliest appearance of the Caterpillar® name is a simple drawing. It resembles the crawling creature and is named for the way the steam tractors designed by Benjamin Holt—founder of Holt and co-founder of Caterpillar—move so nimbly on their tracks. 1925 | Holt and Best companies merge to form the Caterpillar Tractor Co. The red, wavy letters become the company’s first trademarked logo and appear on all of the battleship-gray- painted machines. 1930 | Caterpillar abandons the waves in favor of strength and simplicity with a strong, straightforward typeface. The Helvetica-style font follows Cat’s focus on streamlining their equipment. 1931 | The company's gray paint is replaced as Cat® adopts Hi-Way Yellow for all their equipment. 1950 | With increasing brand recognition and abbreviation, Caterpillar is shortened to “Cat” on all machines. 1967 | The first official logo appears with the abstract Block C and Cat solidifies its placement with the model name in the trade mark box. Cat dealers are authorized to use this unified look to use in their advertising for the first time. 1979 | Hi-Way Yellow surrenders to Caterpillar Yellow, and the color becomes synonymous with solid construction machines. 1981 | The logo appears with the Beltline — a black background with a solid red line beneath the Cat logo. For the first time in 50 years, Cat gets colorful, moving beyond black, white, or yellow.

1989 | The famous yellow triangle appears and quickly becomes one of the world’s most recognized icons. 2006 | The Beltline itself changes and becomes the Power Edge trade dress. The edge echoes Cat’s trademark triangle shape.

2017 | Ever on trend, Cat creates a metallic look and feel, morphing its logo to match the strength and grit of the movie “Transformers: The Last Knight” for this one-time campaign.

2018 | The Cat Modern Hex appears for the first time, and the latest trade mark integrates the iconic Cat colors with bold, three-dimensional shapes to reflect its premium quality products. Expect to see this new look machinery-wide by 2020.
